IBB Morse Graduate Fellowship
The Mary F.D. Morse Graduate Fellowship fund is intended 'to support graduate students in biosciences and bioengineering and help support research that will improve the quality of life for those suffering from disease and illness.' A $2,000 prize is awarded to a graduate student each year. Students should have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and scholarly research, with clear dedication to research to improved healthcare. IBB Edgar O'Rear Graduate Student Travel Grants
The Edgar O'Rear Travel Grants are for outstanding IBB graduate students. Selected recipients can receive up to $2500 for costs associated with attending a scientific conference. Students are nominated by their IBB advisor. The nomination includes the student's curriculum vitae, the name and description of the conference that the student would attend, a brief statement from the advisor regarding the benefits of this meeting for the student, and a budget of anticipated costs for attending the conference. If the student has already submitted an abstract for the meeting, this can be included as well.

Faculty Programs

IBB Mock NIH Study Section
IBB recently held a mock study section. The intention of such a section is to assist junior faculty or faculty new to NIH submissions by providing extensive feedback on their proposals in time to make revisions. Each submitted proposal is read by two reviewers. Participants receive written reviews and are also invited to hear the panel discussion.

Faculty Workshop
 Are you interested in biological and biomedical areas? Was high school your last biology class? Each year, Rice's IBB hosts a faculty workshop to address these questions. Specifically, this workshop features an intensive introduction to cell biology, including laboratory modules in mammalian cell culture and microscopy. Click  here to view photos from IBB's 2007 Faculty Workshop.

Commercialize It!
In collaboration with the Houston Technology Center (HTC), IBB will pilot the "Commercialize It" Program in 2008 to help IBB researchers commercialize their ideas. For this program, HTC will make one or more of their bioscience and bioengineering commercializing specialists available for a 2-hour period on one Thursday each month to discuss and evaluate commercialization options for devices and processes that are emerging from the IBB with any faculty, staff or senior students. At these sessions, additional or subsequent meetings can be set up as necessary. These will be informal sessions with either one-on-one or small group discussions. Please come by Keck 115 on those Thursdays, have a coffee and chat with a HTC commercializing expert! Click here for bios on these experts.
